Hello! I’m a freelance journalist who covers health care and I am the critically acclaimed author of two books. Early: An Intimate History of Premature Birth (Harper, 2020) and Taking Care: The Story of Nursing and Its Power to Change Our World (Harper, 2023). I’ve written on health care and other topics for The New York Times, The Washington Post, Insider, Jezebel, Slate and Jezebel, among others. I have been a keynote speaker for national audiences, such as the American Nurses Association, National Association for Neonatal Nurses, The Bioethics Center at Children’s Mercy Kansas City, Seattle Children’s Hospital, Rutgers University, The Simms/Mann Institute, General Electric, and many others. After a first life as a food editor, I have a side gig as a recipe developer for New York Times Cooking. I am active in South Brooklyn Mutual Aid, and I live in Brooklyn, NY, with my husband and daughter—plus two cats and dog. I am available for writing assignments, book clubs, speaking engagements, efforts towards mutual aid, peace and justice, and more.
