Nurses and "irregular" healers have been oppressed and suppressed along gender and racial lines for hundreds of years. In the early modern age there was so much anxiety about female/Indigenous/Black healing knowledge and POWER that nurses and healers were accused of witchcraft. I found the story of one amazing nurse/healer named Paula de Eguiluz, who was born enslaved in the Caribbean and then gained her freedom only to be arrested and charged with witchcraft three times as a result her her healing/nursing work. But she was the rare person who managed to totally subvert the process meant to destroy her. I found out about Paula through an article in the Journal of Advanced Nursing called Hidden Figures of Nursing by Dr. Diana-Lyn Baptiste and co-authors, and in the amazing book As if She Were Free.
